WHAT IS ALUMINIUM AND HOW IS IT USED?
In the earth's crust, aluminium accounts for the largest proportion of metals. However, the element is extremely responsive and therefore appears in nature exclusively bound to other substances. The material you know from cooking pots, aluminium foil, door and window frames can only be produced in an elaborate industrial way. The widespread use has seen aluminium naturally present in drinking water and in almost all foods, including food colourings and stabilises. It is used to preserve vaccines, as a drug and is used in cosmetics. It is difficult to escape it in everyday life.
HOW MUCH ALUMINIUM IS IN OUR DRINKING WATER?
Aluminium is in countless compounds in the earth's crust, it therefore enters groundwater through the natural filtration process. It also enters groundwater via pesticides and fertilizers in farming and agriculture. Naturally the content of aluminium in tap water is 0.01 to 0.1 milligrams per litre. The Drinking Water Ordinance sets a limit of 0.2 milligrams per litre of aluminium in drinking water.
HOW DANGEROUS TO OUR BODIES IS ALUMINIUM IN DRINKING WATER?
The aluminium in drinking water alone is harmless to the human organism, it depends on the total intake per day. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has carried out a meta-study to determine the daily intake of aluminium. It concludes that European citizens absorb between one and 15 milligrams every day.
Therefore, adults absorb up to 0.2 milligrams per kilogram of body weight every day, and infants get up to 0.35 milligrams. Experts believe that an aluminium intake of up to one milligram per kilogram of body weight per week is safe. However, this corresponds to an amount of 0.143 milligrams per day per kilogram. Most EU residents exceed the limit currently. It makes sense to remove the aluminium in tap water by a water filtration treatment.
