Ecological madness

ECOLOGICAL MADNESS

We need to question our current behaviour and find new ways of dealing with the valuable resource water.

IT'S TIME TO RETHINK

We have become accustomed that it is possible to get water from some of the most remote areas of the world. Even to see it as a lifestyle, with a plastic bottle in hand. But what ecological sense does it make to transport water from the Vosges, Tuscany or even the Fiji Islands to us by road, air or sea?

OUR ACTIONS DETERMINE THE FUTURE

If you look at the whole chain from the production of plastic bottles, their transport to the bottler at the source, the subsequent transport to different countries, then the whole ecological madness of our consumer behaviour is revealed.

THE GOOD WOULD BE SO CLOSE

Today, no one can reliably say how many plastic bottles are being recycled in the world. The fact is that many plastic bottles are thrown away carelessly and pile up in land fill to ever larger plastic mountains and are also found in the seas and oceans. Unfortunately, images of polluted beaches have become commonplace.

In addition, the problem of CO2 emissions is even more acute. The Karlsruhe Waterworks have determined that 1 litre of bottled water leads to 1,400 times more CO2 emissions than 1 litre of tap water.

The first positive reactions associated with new legislation are encouraging, but there is still a very long way to go. At the end of 2018, for example, the EU Parliament voted in favour of a ban on disposable plastic from 2021. Britain wants to implement this even earlier. Ultimately, however, the growth of plastic waste is a global problem for which global solutions are needed.

WHAT CAN EACH INDIVIDUAL DO TODAY?

In addition to the absence of avoidable plastic products such as drinking straws or disposable bottles, more attention should be paid to our tap water. It is sourced locally, thus has short transport distances and thanks to the new LUQEL Water Station can soon not only be filtered by possible pollutants, but also individually mineralised. A completely new approach with great potential and a real contribution to a plastic-reduced future of water drinking. It is time to act.
